Karen Amstutz, MD

EVP & Chief Medical Officer, AmeriHealth Caritas

Dr. Amstutz is an accomplished physician executive with 25 years leadership experience in healthcare systems and payers across Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial market segments. Her roles span the breadth of healthcare management including medical expense management, medical policy, behavioral health, advanced clinical analytics, quality improvement analytics and use of digital applications within medical practice. She has led projects which impact healthcare delivery and payment transformation and new managed care program implementation in both corporate and non-profit institutions.

Dr. Amstutz joined AmeriHealth Caritas [WWW.AMERIHEALTHCARITAS.COM] as Chief Medical Officer and leads the enterprise population health strategy and operations. She has had previous roles at Indiana University Health leading the behavioral and community health services, and as Chief Medical Officer at Fortune 500 Magellan, Inc. [NASDAQ: MGLN], focused on managing complex high-cost medical and behavioral health strategy and policy, and developing technology enabled clinical models to serve complex and special populations in Medicare, Medicaid and commercial programs.

Dr. Amstutz has also held leadership positions at Evolent Health and xG Health, focused on clinically effective value-based healthcare delivery, and at Anthem focused on high quality cost-efficient Medicaid and Medicare managed care health plans.

She obtained her Medical Degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and her Master of Business Administration at the University of Chicago. She has clinical training in internal medicine and pediatrics.

She currently serves on the board of Hopebridge, Inc. and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. She has served on the NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR HEALTHCARE RESEARCH AND QUALITY, previously chaired the NATIONAL QUALITY PARTNERS ACTION TEAM ON SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS and as co-course director for the MD/MBA Forum at the INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.
