Chief Medical Officer, Walgreens

Kevin Ban, M.D., was named the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Walgreens in January 2020. Formerly the Chief Medical Officer at athenahealth and Beth Israel Deaconess Needham, Kevin brings over 20 years of clinical experience and expertise in developing innovative medical systems to his current role. In just over a year on the job, Kevin has played a critical role in Walgreens’ pandemic response. He implemented guidelines to ensure patient and team member safety and reduce spread of illness, provided real-time clinical guidance, launched and expanded COVID-19 testing services across thousands of stores, and most recently, rolled out COVID-19 vaccinations.

Throughout his career, Kevin has worked collaboratively with healthcare providers and administrators to provide standardized, patient-centric care and improve health outcomes. This has become his passion and a major focus of his work at Walgreens as he furthers the company’s purpose to champion the health and well-being of every community in America. In addition to his role at Walgreens, Kevin currently serves as a board member of the American Diabetes Association.

Kevin is frequently cited as a medical expert and guest of national news programs including The Today Show, MSNBC News, Morning Joe, Bloomberg TV and Good Morning America, and was a healthcare analyst and reporter for local FOX and ABC affiliates in Boston and New York earlier in his career. He has also contributed commentary and bylines to The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, NPR, and The Washington Post, in addition to contributing to dozens of peer-reviewed publications. Kevin is a frequent panelist and keynote speaker for industry organizations such as the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation, Department of Homeland Security, and the National Health Council.

After completing his Harvard emergency medicine residency at Beth Isreal Deaconess (BIDMC) system, Kevin joined the Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians emergency medicine group as director of Tuscan Emergency Medicine Initiative (TEMI)—an innovative project to develop emergency medicine as a training specialty. He successfully launched Italy’s first pediatric trauma center. During his eight years at TEMI, Kevin learned how to drive improvement outcomes while decreasing the overall cost of care. Kevin also advanced from a clinical instructor to an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School where he taught for a total of ­­13 years.

Originally from northern New Jersey, Kevin graduated from Georgetown University with an MA in theology and later completed his MD from Georgetown’s School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Kevin lives in Boston with his wife Caterina, their two children, Nico and Julia, and two golden retrievers, Daisy and Rosie. He is an avid skier and a novice gardener. He has been a volunteer baseball, soccer, softball and basketball coach at Dover (MA) Recreation and Sports. He is president of Friends of the Dover Greenway, a civically active group of residents who advocate for turning a non-functioning railway line into a recreation path.
